Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have increasingly become critical players in the fight against violent extremism and radicalization in Nigeria. In Bauchi Local Government Area (LGA), Bauchi State, religious leaders and organizations have been actively involved in efforts to counter the spread of radical ideologies, particularly among the youth. These organizations have sought to provide alternative narratives, promote peaceful coexistence, and reintegrate individuals who have been radicalized. As noted by Mohammed et al. (2024), faith-based approaches have the potential to challenge the ideological foundation of extremist groups by offering religious teachings that emphasize peace, tolerance, and unity. This study aims to assess the role of faith-based organizations in deradicalization programs in Bauchi LGA, focusing on their strategies, effectiveness, and challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing involvement of faith-based organizations in deradicalization programs, there is limited research on their effectiveness and the specific contributions they make in combating radicalization in Bauchi LGA. This research aims to assess the impact of faith-based organizations in deradicalization, examining their strategies, the scope of their programs, and the challenges they face in reaching radicalized individuals.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the role of faith-based organizations in deradicalization programs in Bauchi LGA.
To assess the strategies used by faith-based organizations to counter radicalization.
To identify the challenges faced by faith-based organizations in implementing deradicalization programs.
1.4 Research Questions
What role do faith-based organizations play in deradicalization programs in Bauchi LGA?
What strategies do faith-based organizations use to counter radicalization in Bauchi LGA?
What challenges do faith-based organizations face in implementing deradicalization programs in Bauchi LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Faith-based organizations do not significantly contribute to deradicalization in Bauchi LGA.
H₁: Faith-based organizations significantly contribute to deradicalization in Bauchi LGA.
H₂: Effective strategies implemented by faith-based organizations will lead to a reduction in radicalization in Bauchi LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a comprehensive evaluation of the role of faith-based organizations in deradicalization efforts in Bauchi LGA, offering insights into the effectiveness of religious interventions in combating extremism. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, community leaders, and religious institutions in refining their strategies to combat radicalization and promote peace.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the activities of faith-based organizations in Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, and will assess their role in deradicalization programs. It will not extend to other regions of Bauchi State or examine other forms of radicalization beyond religious extremism. Limitations include the potential for biases in the perceptions of religious leaders and challenges in obtaining data from vulnerable or radicalized individuals.
